    Description
    Half length studio portrait of Michael Faraday standing with his left hand resting upon a table, knuckles down, the right holding a bar magnet upright. Faraday wears a dark jacket, and decorated waistcoat with watch chain visible, over lighter-coloured trousers.

    Arched gold surround, inscribed below in gold: “Photographed by MAULL & POLYBLANK, 55, Gracechurch Street and 187a Piccadilly, London.” Signed lower right in ink “M Faraday”. Inscribed in pencil verso “Professor Faraday”.

    Maull & Fox 1879-1908: in partnership with John Fox (1832-1907)

    The Royal Society holds approximately 600 photographic portraits of Fellows taken at Henry Maull studios between the mid-nineteenth century and the early twentieth century.
