    Description
    Three quarter length studio portrait of Fitton seated on a chair with a fleur-de-lys pattern. His coat is open to reveal a watch chain, hands held lightly together on the sitter’s lap.

    Arched gold surround, inscribed below in gold: “Photographed by MAULL & POLYBLANK, 55, Gracechurch Street and 187A Piccadilly, London.” Signed below in ink “Wm. Henry Fitton 6th June 1860”. Inscribed verso “Wm.Hy.Fitton Esq. M.D. F.R.S. F.G.S. Geologist and Author”.

    William Henry Fitton was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1815.

    The Royal Society holds approximately 600 photographic portraits of Fellows taken at Henry Maull studios between the mid-nineteenth century and the early twentieth century.
