    Description
    Three quarter length studio portrait of T H Huxley reclining in an chair, body in near profile, head turned slightly to the viewer. Huxley’s hands are clasped at his lap and he wears a signet ring on his left hand.

    Arched gold surround, inscribed below in gold: “Photographed by MAULL & POLYBLANK, 55, Gracechurch Street and 187A Piccadilly, London.” Signed below in ink “Thomas H. Huxley”. Inscribed verso in pencil: “Professor Huxley F.G.S; F.R.S. F.L.S. &c”.

    Thomas Henry Huxley was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1851. He served as President of the Royal Society 1883-1885.

    The Royal Society holds approximately 600 photographic portraits of Fellows taken at Henry Maull studios between the mid-nineteenth century and the early twentieth century.
