Description
Panaoramic view of Tarawera Range, captioned on a tissue overlay. Central caption reads "Commencement of the Great Fissure in the South End of Tarawera Range." Other features indicated on the overlay are Te-Hape-o-toroa, Mount Hazard and Okaro Lake, near which is the south end of the great fissure. A horizontal scale of 4 miles is noted in faint pencil beneath the image, with a corresponding vertical scale of 11,500 feet in pencil to the right of the photograph. The print is embossed "Charles Spencer, photographer".
Object history
From an album of photographs describing the eruption of Mount Tarawera on the central North Island of New Zealand on 10 June 1886. Presented to the Royal Society by James Hector on 17 July 1886, with additional photographs on 22 September 1886.
