Description
Landscape showing the volcanic mountainside split by a fissure with dark material [lava flows?] emerging from it. In the foreground is a gentle slope with a lighter covering, possibly snow or ash. Print marked "54" upper left. The print is embossed "Charles Spencer, photographer".
Object history
From an album of photographs describing the eruption of Mount Tarawera on the central North Island of New Zealand on 10 June 1886. Presented to the Royal Society by James Hector on 17 July 1886, with additional photographs on 22 September 1886.
