Description
Plate 1, "Monograph of the Coccidaeof the British Isles", by Robert Newstead (Ray Society, 1900-1902). Figures 1-6 Aspidiotus auranth, view of the insects at natural size on orange rind and other details, including puparium: figures 7-14 Aspidiotus ficusa view of the insects at natural size on a ficus leaf and other details including puparium. Individual illustrations are pasted together on a single piece of board: the lower portion is signed "R.Newstead ad nat. del." and dated "May 1891" [struck through]. The facing page is a corrected [in pencil] proof version of the captions, "Explanation of Plate I".
Object history
From a volume of original illustrations for "Monograph of the Coccidae of the British Isles", (Ray Society, 1900-1902). Newstead’s work illustrates the structure and habitat of scaled insects, often having economic importance as agricultural pests. Printed note of presentation pasted onto front marbled endpaper, "From Professor R. Newstead, 67, Handbridge, Chester. Plate 1 stamped "Adlard & Son, Bartholomew Close E.C., 21 Sep.1901. Proof" and annotated in pencil "Own copy Sept 23 1901".
