Description
Plate 3, "Monograph of the Coccidae of the British Isles", by Robert Newstead (Ray Society, 1900-1902). Figures 1-5 Aspidiotus bromelliae, view of insects on a portion of pineapple and details including puparium. Figures 6-8 Aspidiodotus camellae, view of insects on camellia with details of puparium and adult female at gestation. Figures 9-13 Aspidiotus personatus, view if insects on a leaf of Tillandsia with details of puparia and scale. One figure is circled with the note "Omit". Various magnifications. Signed "R.Newstead [del - struck through] ad nat. del." Annotated verso with a manuscript version of the plate description. The facing page is a corrected [in pencil] proof version of captions, "Explanation of Plate III".
Object history
From a volume of original illustrations for "Monograph of the Coccidae of the British Isles", (Ray Society, 1900-1902). Newstead’s work illustrates the structure and habitat of scaled insects, often having economic importance as agricultural pests. Printed note of presentation pasted onto front marbled endpaper, "From Professor R. Newstead, 67, Handbridge, Chester. Plate 1 stamped "Adlard & Son, Bartholomew Close E.C., 21 Sep.1901. Proof" and annotated in pencil "Own copy Sept 23 1901".
