    Plate 13, "Monograph of the Coccidae of the British Isles", by Robert Newstead (Ray Society, 1900-1902). Figures 1-7 Diaspis bromellae, view of the insects on a pineapple and at various stages of development. Figures 8-10 Diaspis boisduvalii, view of the insects on a palm leaf, after potash treatment and thoracic tubercle detail. Figures 11-12 Diapsis calyptoides, view of the insects on a cactus and an adult female after potash treatment. Natural size and magnified to x20, x35, x45 and x500. Signed "R.Newstead ad nat del.", partially cropped. The facing page is a corrected [in pencil] proof version of captions, "Explanation of Plate XIII". Verso is a struck-through version of Figure 1, Diaspis bromellae. Inscribed "on imported pineapple, Chester, April 8 1897".

    From a volume of original illustrations for "Monograph of the Coccidae of the British Isles", (Ray Society, 1900-1902). Newstead’s work illustrates the structure and habitat of scaled insects, often having economic importance as agricultural pests. Printed note of presentation pasted onto front marbled endpaper, "From Professor R. Newstead, 67, Handbridge, Chester. Plate 1 stamped "Adlard & Son, Bartholomew Close E.C., 21 Sep.1901. Proof" and annotated in pencil "Own copy Sept 23 1901".
