Description
Plate 23, "Monograph of the Coccidae of the British Isles", by Robert Newstead (Ray Society, 1900-1902). Margins of pygidium of two varieties of scale insects. Figure 1 Chionaspis biclavis. Figures 2-3 Pinnaspis buxi. At x250 and x600 magnifications. Signed "R.Newstead ad nat del." cropped. Figure 3 was originally pasted over an alternative figure 1 and has subsequently become detached and loose in the volume. The facing page is an approved [in pencil] proof version of captions, "Explanation of Plate XXIII".
Object history
From a volume of original illustrations for "Monograph of the Coccidae of the British Isles", (Ray Society, 1900-1902). Newstead’s work illustrates the structure and habitat of scaled insects, often having economic importance as agricultural pests. Printed note of presentation pasted onto front marbled endpaper, "From Professor R. Newstead, 67, Handbridge, Chester. Plate 1 stamped "Adlard & Son, Bartholomew Close E.C., 21 Sep.1901. Proof" and annotated in pencil "Own copy Sept 23 1901".
