    Description
    Plate 24, "Monograph of the Coccidae of the British Isles", by Robert Newstead (Ray Society, 1900-1902). Figures 1-2 Mytilaspis pomorum, views of the insect on the branch of an apple tree, natural size. Signed below "R.Newstead ad nat del.", cropped and initialled "R.N." A replacement illustration for the figures on the subsequent whole plate. An attached sheet is inscribed in pencil "Mytilaspis pomorum Bouche, Retd. 15 May 1900".
    Object history
    From a volume of original illustrations for "Monograph of the Coccidae of the British Isles", (Ray Society, 1900-1902). Newstead’s work illustrates the structure and habitat of scaled insects, often having economic importance as agricultural pests. Printed note of presentation pasted onto front marbled endpaper, "From Professor R. Newstead, 67, Handbridge, Chester. Plate 1 stamped "Adlard & Son, Bartholomew Close E.C., 21 Sep.1901. Proof" and annotated in pencil "Own copy Sept 23 1901".
