Description
Plate 25, "Monograph of the Coccidae of the British Isles", by Robert Newstead (Ray Society, 1900-1902). Figures 1-9 Mytilaspis pomorum, studies of male and female insects with details of antennae, legs and spiracles. Figures 10-12 Mytilaspis pinnaeformis, studies of adult female and cast skins. Figures 13-14 Pinnaspis buxi, studies of the antenna, spiacles and parastigmatic gland of the adult female. Various magnifications. Signed "R.Newstead ad nat del." The facing page is a corrected [in pencil] proof version of captions, "Explanation of Plate XXV".
Object history
From a volume of original illustrations for "Monograph of the Coccidae of the British Isles", (Ray Society, 1900-1902). Newstead’s work illustrates the structure and habitat of scaled insects, often having economic importance as agricultural pests. Printed note of presentation pasted onto front marbled endpaper, "From Professor R. Newstead, 67, Handbridge, Chester. Plate 1 stamped "Adlard & Son, Bartholomew Close E.C., 21 Sep.1901. Proof" and annotated in pencil "Own copy Sept 23 1901".
