Description
Henry Bond's inclinatory needle, a form of compass. Frontispiece to The longitude found: or, a treatise shewing an easy and speedy way... To find the longitude..., by Henry Bond (London, 1676).
Henry Bond claimed his inclinatory needle provided a method of finding position at sea by observing the magnetic variation. His article on the subject was published in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Vol 8. In 1674 Charles II established a committee of members of court and Fellows of the Royal Society to examine Bond's instrument and hypothesis.
