    Arundel
Earl of Arundel (1586-1646) by T. Murray presented by Isaac Newton
    Lord Arundel
    Object history
The source of the painting is usually given as a presidential gift of Sir Isaac Newton, for example in The Record of the Royal Society of London (London, Harrison and Sons, 1897), p.175, however, with no date of gift.

The occasion is recorded in the Society’s Journal Book: “The President presented the Society with the picture of Henry Earl of Arundell Collector of the Library call’d the Arundelian, and now in the possession of the Society; He had their humble thanks for the same and the picture was ordered to be hung up in the Library.” Henry Howard (1628-1684) 6th Duke of Norfolk donated what became known as the Norfolk Library. Thomas Howard was its collector. [Royal Society Journal Book Original JBO/12, p.233, meeting of 29 May 1718].
