Description
Oval, half-face portrait of Samuel Horsley, in bishop’s robes. Horsley was created Bishop of St Asaph in 1802 and the painting must have been commissioned close to that date, probably to commemorate Horsley’s inauguration.
Samuel Horsley was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1767.

Object history
Council Minutes for 1893 state that “the Treasurer was authorised to purchase for ten guineas a miniature of Bishop Horsley…” [Royal Society Council Minutes, Printed, volume 7 1892-98, 16 March 1893, p.29]. Payment of bills at a subsequent Council meeting indicates that the vendor was James Pinches [Royal Society Council Minutes, Printed, volume 7 1892-98, 20 April 1893, p.31].
