Description
An amateur portrait entitled: 'The Rev William Jones of Nayland Suffolk 1726-1800'. The subject is seated, presenting his right profile. Jones is shown reading in a panelled room dressed in clerical clothes of black coat, knee breeches and stockings and wig. His back is to a window which has shutters and a raised drape. At his right elbow is a small writing table upon which rests books and an inkwell containing a quill pen.
William Jones was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1775.

“The Rev William Jones of Nayland, Suffolk.
Fellow of the Royal Society.
Born 1726 died 1800.
For an account of his life vide Gentleman’s Magazine for 1800 is vol LXX page 183 and also “High Church Theological Works”by the Rev. W. Jones published 1801in the preface of which there is an account of him.
Mr Jones was a great friend of George Horne Bishop of Norwich and wrote his biography, & there is an oil portrait of him which came to T M Kirkwood with Gore Court. This small portrait came through the Brockman side of the family through the Whitear family connection with the Hornes.”
