    Description
    Oval head and shoulders portrait of the scientist in formal evening wear: black coat, waistcoat and tie; white shirt and studs. The sitter has white hair, receding, and side whiskers. Signed lower right “F.Beadell”.

    William Sharpey was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1839.

    Council minute states: “On the motion of the Treasurer, the Council approved of the purchase of a water-colour portrait of the late Dr. Sharpey, by the late F.Beadell, for the sum of £10 10s.” [Royal Society Minutes of Council, Printed, vol.11 1914-1920 p.75].
