Description
A late, informal study of the white-haired John Tyndall at 73 years. Half-length, the sitter is in a relaxed, contemplative posture, lounging back in his chair. His hands rest in his lap with fingers interlaced. Apparently caught in thought while writing, an open silver ink-well is on the table in front, with paper and pen. A bookcase occupies the right-hand background, but Tyndall’s head and shoulders are framed by a dark cushion.
John Tyndall was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1852.
