    Description
    Evelyn stands side-on, gaze toward the viewer. He is informally dressed in a loose brown robe over a white shirt: his hair is in a simple style, naturally grey-white and collar-length. In his right hand Evelyn holds a copy of his book Sylva (1664), its title and author surname on the red spine label.

    John Evelyn was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1663.

    The gift is noted in a meeting of 25 February 1707/08: “Mr. Evelyn’s Picture was presented to the Society by Mrs.Evelyn his Widow who was order’d the thanks of the Society for their gratefull present.” [Royal Society Journal Book Original JBO/11 p.134].
