Evelyn stands side-on, gaze toward the viewer. He is informally dressed in a loose brown robe over a white shirt: his hair is in a simple style, naturally grey-white and collar-length. In his right hand Evelyn holds a copy of his book Sylva (1664), its title and author surname on the red spine label.
