    Description
    A series of sketches and caricatures, interspersed with doodles, on a blotter used at a Transit of Venus Committee meeting at the Royal Society, 1882. Originally misidentified by a contemporary as an 1870 meeting of Council and pasted into a volume of press cuttings for that year.

    Individuals identified include (left to right): Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne-Cecil, third Marquess of Salisbury (1830-1903), prime minister; George Carey Foster (1835-1919) chemist and physicist; Alexander William Williamson (1824-1904) chemist; Sir William Henry Mahoney Christie (1845-1922) astronomer; Warren de la Rue (1815-1889) chemist and astronomer; Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) biologist; John Ball (1818-1889) glaciologist; Sir George Gabriel Stokes (1819-1903) physicist; and William Grylls Adams (1836-1915) scientist.
