The sitter has brown gloves, one of which is held by the left hand: the right is bare and holding what may be a hat. By Rycault’s left hand is a sword-hilt. Object history
Presented by the Rev. Dr. Leighton Pullan (1865-1940), 1934.

Correspondence preserved in the Society’s archives show that the painting was originally offered to the National Portrait Gallery (NPG), London. The Gallery suggested the Royal Society as a home, since NPG already had one image of the sitter. [Modern Domestic Archives MDA3/2 E.P.Pullan-Royal Society correspondence, 6 November-11 December 1934]. Accepted by Council of the Society on its Anniversary Day meeting, [Royal Society Minutes of Council, Printed, vol.14 1932-1936, meeting 30 November 1934, minute 25, p.180] the picture arrived on 11 December 1934.
