Half length portrait of Sarmeto, wearing a shoulder length wig and holding a book with his left hand, spine forward, with the label “NEW”. A ring is shown prominently on the little finger of this hand. A book case, half hidden by a curtain or drape, is seen behind. .
Inscribed: “H.Stevens Pinxt. 1729 Andrw. Miller fecit, 1737. Dr. Jacob de Castro Sarmento, do Real Collegio dos Medicos de Londres, e Socio da R.S. Aetat. Suae, 45. 1737.” Inscribed in pencil lower left “1729”.
Jacob de Castro Sarmento was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1729.
