Description

De Moivre is within a painted oval, at half-length. He wears a dark, shoulder-length wig with a light brown coat, closed by a single button, and a white neck cloth.

Abraham de Moivre was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1697.

Object history

Presented by Edward Montagu, 1769.

The donation is recorded in the Society’s Journal Books: “An original portrait of the late Mr. De Moivre F.R.S. by Mr Highmore was presented from Edward Montagu Esq., F.R.S., and thanks were ordered for the same.” [Royal Society Journal Book Orginal JBO/27, p.226, meeting of 8 June 1769].
