    Description
    Head and shoulders portrait of Gresham wearing a dark coat and cap with a ruff collar.

    Inscribed: “MILTON SMITH & Co. LONDON. SIR THOMAS GRESHAM, Founder of the Royal Exchange and Gresham College. A Resident in Bishopsgate Ward. Born 1519. Died 1579. With the compliments of Henry Clarke, Chairman, Guildhall Library Committee. 28th November 1887.” Clarke’s signature is in manuscript and there is a facsimile signature of Thomas Gresham.

    Thomas Gresham was not a Fellow of the Royal Society. He founded Gresham College in London, the Royal Society’s first home.
