    Object history
    This medal is awarded by the Royal Society biennially (in even years) for important discoveries in the field of thermal or optical properties of matter and their applications. It was founded by Sir Benjamin Thompson FRS, Count Rumford (1753-1814) and was first awarded in 1800.
