    Description
    Half length portrait of John Evans, seated. Evans is bearded and wears gold-rimmed spectacles. He is shown wearing a black jacket and waistcoat, at which a gold watch-chain is visible. He has a white shirt with a blue bow tie. Evans holds an archaeological artefact, apparently a head, possibly carved in ivory or bone.

    Sir John Evans was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1864. He served as Vice-President and Treasurer of the Royal Society.

    The offer of the portrait was reported to Council on 10 May 1900: “Read a letter from Prof. R. Meldola, offering on behalf of a number of the Fellows, for acceptance of the Society, a portrait in oils of Sir John Evans, by Mr. A. S. Cope, A.R.A. Resolved – that the portrait be accepted, with the best thanks of the Society...” [Royal Society Minutes of Council, Printed CMP/8, 1898-1903, 10 May 1900, p.130-131].
