Head and shoulders in a painted oval, Pepys wears a dark wig and white shirt with lace at the throat and a loose brown robe.
Samuel Pepys was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1665, he served as its President from 1684 to 1686.

Object history
Traditionally Pepys’s presentation although not noted in Council Minutes. The painting was in the Society’s collection by 1768, as it was noted by a contemporary visitor, hanging in the Anti-chamber at Crane Court. [“A list of original pictures at the Royal Society House.
