    Description
    Three-quarter length portrait of Charles Montagu, posed standing, leaning with his left arm resting on an architectural plinth bearing a circular acanthus design within which is his coat of arms. Montagu is dressed in a brown coat, unbuttoned to reveal a white shirt. The cuffs and neck-cloth are of lace. Montagu wears a long wig and the blue ribbon and star of the Order of the Garter. A sword hilt is visible at his left hip.

    Charles Montagu was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1695, he served as its President from 1695 to 1698.

    The purchase of this painting was made with support of a PRISM Fund grant from the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. It was offered for sale by Historical Portraits of 31 Dover Street, London. The picture had previously belonged to Captain F. Montagu of Milton Park, Doncaster and was included in his sale at Christie’s, 28 June 1946. It was sold again at Christie’s, 29 April 1966 (Lord Bossom, lot 46) as a work by Godfrey Kneller.
