Head and shoulders portrait of a smiling and bespectacled Hartley, wearing red and black academic robes over a grey-blue suit, white shirt and light blue tie. Hartley’s hair and moustache are white.

The acceptance of the portrait is recorded in Royal Society Officer’s Minutes: “A suggestion that the Society should accept a portrait of him painted by Sir Cyril Hinshelwood was warmly welcomed. “ [Royal Society Officers’ Meetings Minutes OMM volume 1969-1972 p.101 OM/101(70) meeting of 5 November 1970]. Correspondence between Hartley and the Royal Society on the presentation has been preserved, including Hartley’s wishes on framing. By 31 December Hartley wrote: “I now have the portrait by Hinsh here ready to hand over when anyone is passing...” [Letter, Harold Hartley to D.C. Martin, 8 December 1970. RS provenance file, originally LIB/23]. The picture was at the Royal Society by 13 January 1971 [Letter, I. Kaye to Harold Hartley, 13 January 1971.
