Object history
The 1951 catalogue describes the work as part of a several studies: “A group of sixty portrait studies made by Brian Thomas in preparation for the ceremonial paintings. The procedure when doing these pictures was first to make sketches at the ceremony itself – an example of such sketches is included – and then to ask for a twenty-minute sitting from each of the main participants.” [Exhibition catalogue, London ceremonies and personalities: paintings of ceremonies by Brian Thomas; portraits and landscapes by Patrick Phillips and Peter Greenham, A.R.A. 11th June-7th July 1951 (Guildhall Art Gallery, London, 1951), p.17].
