Presented by Alfred Maurice Binnie FRS (1901-1986), 1970.
The offer of this picture was made by A.M.Binnie by letter to the Society’s Executive Secretary: “Three years ago Ruskin Spear painted two portraits of G.I.Taylor, of which one hangs in the Department of Applied Mathematics. I am wondering if the Society would care to have the other as a gift...I would buy the picture from the syndicate who acquired it as a holding operation...“ [Letter, A.M.Binnie to D.C.Martin, 17 December 1969. Royal Society provenance file]. The proposed gift was “accepted with gratitude” at a meeting of Royal Society Officers on 15 January 1970 [Royal Society Officers’ Meetings Minutes OMM volume 1969-1972 p.25 OM/8(70) meeting of 15 January 1970] and Binnie was informed by letter on 23 January 1970. [Letter, D.C.Martin to A.M.Binnie, 23 January 1970, Royal Society provenance file Lib/22/4/IK/GH].
