Half-length portrait of Sir William Bragg, seated and wearing academic robes over a dark suit, white shirt and spotted tie. His hands are clasped at his waist, the fingers interlocked. Behind is a set of bookshelves with leather bound volumes.
Sir William Henry Bragg was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1907, he served as its President from 1935 to 1940.

The decision to employ Knight was recorded in the contemporary Notes and Records: “The committee appointed by Council to make arrangements for the painting of a portrait of Sir William Bragg have invited Mr. Harold Knight, R.A., to undertaken the commission...” [Notes and Records of the Royal Society, vol.3, 1940-1941, p.102].
