    Description
Half length portrait of Sir Archibald Geikie, seated in a wooden armchair, dressed in a dark suit, white shirt and maroon tie with a gold stick-pin. A watch chain is visible at the sitter’s waist. Geikie has long white side-whiskers and holds metal-rimmed spectacles in his right hand, the left resting on his thigh. Behind, a fossilised bone is visible at the sitter’s right shoulder with others painted more obscurely to the right as viewed.

Archibald Geikie was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1865, he served as its President from 1908 to 1913.
    Object history
    Presented by subscribers, 1914.

Not noted in Council Minutes, Officers’ Minutes or Miscellaneous Correspondence of the period. The picture is the traditional Presidential portrait and was therefore presumably unveiled on or near the Anniversary Meeting of 1913, Geikie’s final as President. Noted in the 1931 portraits catalogue. [Catalogue of portraits. The Royal Society (June, 1931), p.5].
