    Half-length portrait of Gray in profile, left face. Dramatically lit, Gray is shown wearing a dark suit, barely visible, with a white neck-cloth. He wears grey hair, receding slightly, and tied back.

    Edward Whitaker Gray was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1779.

    The original letter of donation is preserved in the Society’s archives: “I am authorized by my friend Mr.Calcott R.A. to offer for your acceptance a portrait painted by him of Dr.Gray formerly one of your Secretaries, and beg to inform you that the Portrait is at Mr.Calcott’s residence at Kensington, and ready to be delivered to your order.” [Letter, Edward Hawkins, 3 March 1830, to the President and Council of the Royal Society.
