Description
Half-length portrait of Baron Fleck of Saltcoats seated at a carved wooden table, body slightly turned to the viewer’s left. Fleck wears a dark blue suit, white shirt and black tie with white spots and a handkerchief in his breast pocket. His left hand has a wristwatch and holds a pair of spectacles. In Fleck’s right hand is a black and gold pen, poised in the act of signing papers. Also on the table are three bound volumes, including an I.C.I. Annual Report.
Alexander Fleck was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1955.

The painting was one of a series of chairmen of Imperial Chemical Industries (I.C.I.) Limited, commissioned to hang in Imperial Chemicals House, 9 Millbank, London. Following storage with ICI archives in the North-East of England, the work was transferred to the Royal Society in 2003. [Letter, J.S.Wheeler, 12 June 2003, to the Royal Society. The painting was presented to the Royal Society with a bust of Alfred Nobel, by Erik Lindberg.
