    Object history
    Presented by J E Gray FRS, 1873.

Two letters from J.E.Gray note the presentation and give some background to this work: “The portrait of Mr Combe was given to me by Mr. Charles Tooke, his nephew, the son of his sister and T.Tooke, Esq. The author of “Prices”. Mr Combe married the daughter of Dr. E.W.Gray, Sec.R.S., my uncle. I believe the Portrait of Mr.T.Combe is by Joseph who painted all the family“ [Original letters in the Royal Society’s archives, J.E.Gray, 8 August 1873 and 13 August 1873 to the Secretary of the Royal Society, Miscellaneous Correspondence MC/10/10 and 12. Extracted in the printed List of portraits and busts and catalogue of medals in the possession of the Royal Society..(London, Harrison for the Royal Society, 1892), p.3].

Gray presented this portrait, together with an oil painting of John George Children FRS.
