Half-length portrait of Weldon, seated on a wooden armchair with green leather armrests. The sitter is bearded and wears a black jacket and waistcoat, white shirt and yellow tie. His left hand, resting on the arm of the chair, has a double-banded gold signet ring on the little finger. The right hand holds a book, the place kept by Weldon’s index finger.

This work was completed in early 1884, according to the artist’s biographer. [The life and work of Frank Holl, by A.M.Reynolds, (London, Methuen, 1912), p.230]. Council Minutes note the acceptance of this gift: “Resolved – that an oil painting of Walter Weldon, F.R.S., by Frank Holl, R.A., bequeathed to the Royal Society by his daughter-in-law, Mrs. F.J.Weldon, be accepted.” [Royal Society Council Minutes, Printed, CMP/15, 1936-1940, meeting of 10 December 1936, minute 17, p.3].
