    Description
    Head and shoulders portrait of Brodie, seated in a red-brown armchair. Dressed in a dark coat and waistcoat with a white shirt and black tie. Body turned slightly to the viewer’s right, Brodie looks directly to the viewer.

    Benjamin Brodie was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1810, he served as its President from 1858 to 1861.

    Copy of an 1860 original by G.F.Watts. [Dated and reproduced as the frontispiece to Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie, by Timothy Holmes (London, T.Fisher Unwin, 1898)]. The donation, by the second baronet and son of the sitter, is recorded in Council Minutes: “Sir B.C.Brodie offered a copy, by Alfred Thompson, of a portrait, by Watts, R.A., of the late Sir B.C.Brodie, Bart., formerly President of the Royal Society. Resolved, - That the best thanks of President and Council be returned to Sir B.C.Brodie for his gift.” [Royal Society Council Minutes, Printed, CMP/4, meeting of 30 October 1873, p.189].
