Head and shoulders portrait of Sir John Chardin in a painted oval. Chardin wears a brown shoulder length wig and dark green gown with a white neck-cloth or cravat.

The picture was offered to the Society in a letter from the donor: “I have a good portrait in oil (& framed) of Sir John Chardin, an Eastern Traveller & writer, and noting in a Biography that he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society I thought that the President, Council & Fellows would like to place it with their other numerous portraits, and if so, have much pleasure in asking their acceptance of the same, & on hearing from you would forward it to the Society.” [Letter, George C. The donation is recorded in Council Minutes: “The Treasurer reported that Mr.George Handford had presented to the Society a portrait in oil of Sir John Chardin. Resolved – That the special thanks of the President and Council be presented to Mr Handford for his valuable gift.” [Royal Society Council Minutes, Printed, CMP/6, meeting of 7 July 1887, p.157].
