Description
Half-length portrait of Sir Joseph Petavel, wearing a grey suit, white wing-collared shirt and black tie. A gold watch-chain is visible at the waistcoat and Petavel wears gold cufflinks and a white carnation as a buttonhole. He holds a slide-rule in his left hand and a silver pen in his right; the right arm leans against a red fabric-covered surface. Petavel has greying hair and a moustache.

Upon the death of Sir Joseph Petavel in 1936, he bequeathed furniture and other personal effects to the Royal Society, for the use of his successors (as Directors of the National Physical Laboratory) at Bushy House. The bequest was noted briefly at at Council [Royal Society Council Minutes, Printed, CMP/14, 1932-1936, meeting of 29 October 1936, p.374] and is described more fully in an article by Sir Aaron Klug. [“The Royal Society and the NPL”, by Sir Aaron Klug, Notes and Records of the Royal Society, vol.55 no.1 (2001), p151]. The materials were transferred to the Royal Society at Chicheley Hall, with this commemorative painting, in 2010.
