Object history
Presented by George Scott FRS (c.1721-1780), 1772.
This portrait has been attributed to George White (presumably the draughtsman and engraver, c.1684-1732) since the 1834 list of the Society’s portraits and in successive catalogues. However there seems to be no independent evidence to support this attribution. [Portraits in the possession of the Royal Society (London, Royal Society, November 1834), p.2] . The donation is recorded in the Society’s Journal Books: “A Pourtrait of the Revd. Mr. Derham formerly F.R.S. presented by his nephew Geo. Scott Esq., F.R.S.” [Royal Society Journal Book, Original, JBO/28, meeting of 4 November 1773, p.179].
