Description
Head and shoulders portrait of William Thomas Brande turned to the viewer's right. Dressed in a dark coat with a white high stock and waistcoat.
William Thomas Brande (1788-1866), British chemist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1809. He served as the Society's Secretary from 1816-1826, and Vice President from 1834-1835. He was awarded its Bakerian Medal and Lecture in 1813 and 1819, which he delivered on 'On some new Electro-Chemical Phenomena' and 'On the Composition and Analysis of the inflammable Gaseous Compounds resulting from the destructive Distillation of Coal and Oil; with some Remarks on their relative heating and illuminating power' respectively. He was also awarded its Copley Medal in 1813 for his 'communications concerning the Alcohol contained in Fermented Liquors and other Papers, printed in the Philosophical Transactions'.
