Description
A three-quarter length portrait of Rayleigh, landscape format, seated in a green leather library chair. Rayleigh is in a relaxed pose, his left arm resting on the chair back, the right hand holding his knee, his legs crossed. He wears a black suit and tie, a white shirt with a single gold stud. Behind is a table upon which is a scatter of papers and bound books.
Rayleigh was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1873, he served as its President from 1905 to 1908.

This Presidential portrait is noted in Council Minutes: “The Secretaries reported that the portrait of Lord Rayleigh, which had been procured by a Committee of subscribers with a view to its being offered to the Royal Society, was now ready, and would be handed over to the Society at the Anniversary Meeting. Resolved – That the best thanks of the Council be transmitted to the donors.” [Royal Society Council Minutes, Printed, CMP/8 1898-1903, meeting of 19 November 1903, p.467].
