Description
Plate 6 from the paper "On some fossil bones discovered in caverns in the limestone quarries of Oreston...", by Joseph Whidbey with the supplementary paper "A description of the fossil bones found in the caverns of Oreston...", by William Clift, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, vol.113 (1823), pp.78-90. Section of the caves at Oreston, near Plymouth, Devon, the site of excavations for Palaeolithic remains visited by William Buckland FRS and other contemporary scientists. The work has the heading "Sketch No. 1. A longitudinal section of the caverns lately discovered in the breakwater quarries at Oreston." There is an inset reference key and various explanatory captions. The work has a scale, below, of 1 inch to 10 feet. Inscribed with publication and plate details and a pencil note upper right "To be reduced to usual size." Inscribed and initialled in ink lower right "Oreston Quarries Augt. 12th 1822 W.C. " Royal Society stamp verso.
