Description
Ornithological study of the African Crowned Eagle Stephanoaetus coronatus, shown perched on a low tree branch.
Plate 224 from chapter 14 of Gleanings of natural history, exhibiting figures of quadrupeds, birds, insects, plants, &c..., by George Edwards, volume 1 (London, for the author, 1758). The author describes the bird within the text: “Is about third part less than the larger sort of Eagles we see in Europe...I saw this bird alive in Bartholomew Fair, London, in 1752, where I made a drawing of it. Its keeper told me it was brought from the coast of Guiney in Africa; which account I believe, having been since confirmed in it by Mr. Penwold, a gentleman who lives on Garlick -Hill, London, where I saw two others of this very species of bird brought from Guiney.”
The plate is inscribed: “A.D.1754 The Crowned Eagle from the coast of Guinea. Delin: et Sculp: pr. Geo Edwards.”
