Description
Three-quarter length seated portrait showing George Parker in ceremonial robes with a fur collar and long, lace cravat. He is shown in a chair with a crown motif and is seated next to a collection of documents, holding one rolled up in his right hand. His left hand rests on his hip, and he is seen looking out towards the viewer with an amicable expression. The oil painting on which this print is based is also in the Royal Society collection.
Inscribed below: ‘Thos. Hudson Pinxt 1753.’ ‘I. Faber Fecit 1754.’ ‘The Right Honble George Earl of Macclesfield / President of the Royal Society, &c. / Done from an Original Picture in the Possession of the Royal Society.’
George Parker, 2nd Earl of Macclesfield (1697-1764), British astronomer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1722. He acted as President from 1752-1764.
