    Description
    Half-length portrait of Martin Rees engaging the viewer in the act of speaking, above a Royal Society branded platform or lectern. Rees is dressed in a grey suit and white shirt with a red and white patterned tie. The work features a cropped version of the Society’s 350th year logo.

    Martin Rees was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1979, he served as its President from 2005 to 2010.

    The work was commissioned by the Treasurer and unveiled on 30 November 2010 at the Royal Society’s headquarters in Carlton House Terrace, London.

    Bryan Organ also presented the Society with two preparatory drawings: one for the main portrait and a second study of Martin Rees’s hands making characteristic gestures.
